What to do in the first day after a flood, burst pipe, or leak to limit damage, mould, and cost.

Act fast. The EPA warns that mould can begin growing within 24–48 hours of water exposure, so the first day matters more than any other.
Sudden, accidental damage (a burst pipe or storm) is often covered by homeowners insurance; gradual leaks and flooding usually are not (flooding needs separate coverage — and FEMA estimates just one inch of water can cause roughly $25,000 in damage). A professional water damage restoration company can bill most insurers directly and has the equipment to dry a home properly before mould sets in.
